About Me

Max Grossman is a furniture designer/maker and graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of American Crafts. His work has been shown for display in the 2014 CIAS Honors Show as well as Gallery R and the Vignelli Center in Rochester NY. Max’s passion for woodworking began at the New Jersey Y Camps, where he designed and built stage sets. Max continues to refine his skills in the craft while sharing his knowledge to the next generation as the woodshop teacher at West Orange High School in West Orange NJ where he resides.

His work focuses primarily on designing dynamic pieces that creatively mix wood and metal. He draws inspiration from the industrial surroundings and machinery that people in modern society use to function. Always up for a challenge, Max enjoys the process of figuring out how to create jigs and fixtures for parts, and how they will best fit into his final product. This plays well into his dislike for right angles and his passion to use asymmetry, angles and curved elements in his work.

He seeks to build furniture that is both aesthetically pleasing and comfortable. Max likes going against the tide, especially when it comes to his efforts to create and build furniture that is sustainable and can be treasured by individuals and families for years to come. He believes that today’s society focuses too much on disposable and boring "flat pack" furniture that degrades quickly and provides a poor user experience. Max creates furniture than can be lived in, take some abuse, and still look great. His pieces can stand up to wear and tear, and can be easily moved around and used to suit the changing needs of any household.

On top of furniture Max specializes in designing and building custom built ins and details that can set a home apart from the crowd and give a truly custom experience to the owners. Max produces furniture and general carpentry projects out of his shop in West Orange to the surrounding towns in Essex County.
